Pagthinathan.jpgWelcome to the Faculty of Agriculture, Eastern University, Sri Lanka.
The Faculty of Agriculture is one of the oldest Faculties of the Eastern University located at Vantharumoolai, Chenkalady. A vision of faculty to be a centre of excellence for higher learning and research in Agriculture to meet national and global needs and mission of the faculty to produce graduates of the highest professional standard contributing towards technology enhancement, dissemination of knowledge and skills and involvement in sustained productivity in the agricultural sector of Sri Lanka. Faculty of Agriculture was a response to the long-felt need for the development of the three districts in the Eastern region with respect to Higher Education. The Faculty conducts courses leading to the B.Sc in Agriculture (Honors) for undergraduate, Master of Science in Agriculture and Diploma courses.  The Faculty, at present, consists of six departments of studies to support the academic programs as well as the outreach activities. The faculty is equipped with experienced academic staff, attractive curriculum, laboratory facilities, research facilities, experimental farm, publications, etc. We are committed to converting our students’ educational experience through multidisciplinary and experimental learning that have real-world applications. In addition to the subject knowledge, faculty offer soft skills such as communication skills, computer information technology skills and life skills development to meet the needs of the society.

The faculty was also expected to serve as a catalyst for the agricultural and economic development of the region. The agricultural education offered, and the agricultural research pursued by the university caters to the special needs of the region as dictated by a seasonally dry climate and low soil fertility. The faculty in particular, therefore have a vital role to play in the upliftment of the social and economic standards of  a predominantly rural population who depend  largely on agriculture. The Faculty has well-established Crop and Livestock farms, about 15 acres in extent for teaching purposes and for the issue of seed and planting materials and breeding stock of farm animals to the public. The faculty has also established a Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Resource Management (CENSARM) in 1996. The mission of the faculty, in line with Government policy to modernize agriculture and eradicate poverty, is to produce men and women of the highest professional standard contributing towards technology enhancement, dissemination of knowledge and skill and involvement in sustained productivity in the Agricultural sector of Sri Lanka.

Students of the faculty utilize all opportunities of educational, artistic, social, cultural and sportive environment readily available at the university. Our students have immense opportunities to get involved in social and welfare activities through various student societies as well as through events conducted by the Faculty. Our Degree programmes are highly recognized all over the world and lead to obtain excellent career opportunities, nationally and internationally. I am very confident that the graduates produced by the faculty are of good standards and should have the ability to work anywhere in the world carrying the prestigious name of Faculty.

I invite all of you to explore our website and learn about the learning environment, a diverse range of study programmes and the wealth of services that the Faculty of Agriculture offers.
